Why "Maarte"?
“Maarte” literally translated from Tagalog means “artistic” or “creative.” However, the word is commonly used as slang to refer to someone (particularly a young womxn) as “high-maintenance,” “picky,” or “pretentious.” In other words, “maarte” means “a diva”.
We have chosen to reclaim and redefine this word. In our work, we embrace a “maarte” attitude: we encourages transformation. We things personally. We perform and exist without shame. We are selective and we know exactly what we want: the fair and honest representation of the fullness of Filipinx-American experiences – and we’re out to get it.
