The World Premiere YOU'RE SAFE HERE explores the 
Embodied Experience of Mental Illness through Immersive Docu-Theatre, November 21 - 23, 2019

MaArte Theatre Collective confronts social stigma regarding mental illness and recovery among San Diego's LGBTQ+, immigrant, and POC communities through the World Premiere docudrama, You're Safe Here, created by Allain Francisco, Yari Cervas, and Edward Delos Reyes. 

This physical storytelling piece features the struggles and triumphs of individual journeys through recovery via verbatim testimony from San Diego patients.

You're Safe Here offers the unique opportunity for audience members to flex their powers of empathy by immersing themselves in the visceral experience of what it is to live with mental illness.

Collaborators and Mentors include: UCSD School of Medicine, Dr. Alana Iglewicz, Dr. Martin Stein, Prof. Robert Castro, Prof. Anna Deavere-Smith, & Chef Danilo Tangalin.

Allain Francisco (Creator, Actor) is a local San Diego Actor and fourth year medical student at UCSD School of Medicine pursuing a career in psychiatry. His education in medicine inspires him to explore the intersection between theatrical artistry and mental illness. San Diego Theatre credits include: Ojo (La Jolla Playhouse), The Oldest Boy (San Diego REP), Colored (Maarte Theatre Collective), Lost in the Pines (Magnetic North Theatre Co.), Les Miserables (413 Project), and War Games (Nomads Theatre Company). He has also done several commercials and short films within San Diego and Los Angeles, and is represented by NTA Talent Agency (LA) and Shamon-Freitas (SD). He is proud to present this piece with Maarte Theatre Collective and in collaboration with UCSD SOM.

Yari Cervas (Co-Creator, Director) is a Filipinx theatre-maker, community organizer, and poet. They are proud to serve as MaArte's Artistic Director and thankful to the 2019 San Diego Int’l Fringe Festival for sponsoring the 2020 tour of the original one-woman show Your Best American Girl [Best of the Fest; Critic’s Pick Award; Cultural Exchange Award] to the Manila, New Zealand and Adelaide Int’l Fringe Festivals. They have had the pleasure of collaborating with organizations such as Asian Story Theatre, Blindspot Collective, Cygnet Theatre, Diversionary Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, People of Interest, San Diego REP, TuYo Theatre, The Old Globe, and MOXIE Theatre. Favorite credits include: Summer New Play Festivals The FLIP Side (2018) & Myths Unspoken (2019) (MaArte Theatre Collective); The Fire in Me (Asian Story Theatre; World Premiere) [Award of Recognition from the State Legislature of California]; Tar and Feather (Westmont College Festival Theatre; World Premiere) [Santa Barbara Indy Award for Directing]; and M. Butterfly as Assistant Director (dir. Desdemona Chiang; Southcoast REP. They give thanks to their ninuno, pamilya, and kapwa for their oceans of resilience, passion for living, and fierce familial love.
